My Love for Reading
History is really fascinating, and most of the works about history helps to give us a sense of belonging. It is through history that we get our heritage and curve traditions and cultures to guide us; we get to learn about what happened — both the good and the ugly. Then we deduce what we can do to forge forward.
Since I was a young girl growing up in Serbia, I loved reading books. This is a tradition I adopted from my dad who always bought story books for me. I used to love them and I must admit that dad was good at selecting the best.
As I grew up, I became interested in reading history books. There is usually a lot to learn from history especially that of a country like mine which had been involved in ethnic cleansing as well as several uprising. Sometimes I feel pity for what my people had to undergo back then. The important thing however is to forge on and think of the best ways to reconcile and form harmonious relationships with each other.
Therefore to get a better understanding of this, I dug deep into history about various uprisings and wars since the creation of man. I read how various civilizations that happened to lock heads and how various wars and injustices were solved and a lasting solution came into place.
As much as I was overwhelmed by all that I read, I felt that in one way, I should find a means of inspiring my fellow citizens to always co-exist harmoniously.
The opportunity presented itself when I was in college; during that time, there was a writing competition which had been sponsored by several institutions of higher learning as well as other educational bodies. This was my chance.
Therefore during the grace period given for those interested to write an essay, I chose to write one about “Retracing Our Roots: A Journey to Prosperity”. Since I had read several books and publications about history and knew much about what had happened in my country, I went on to create what would later become a masterpiece.
It was an essay which detailed what we all should be doing to live in peace and mutual understanding while engaging in community development and helping each other regardless of our ethnic background. My tone was simple and my writing was impeccable while the message was very strong and clear.
After submitting the essay, it took another 60 days before I emerged the best essay writer at a joint event held in one of our local colleges. During the event, a lot of praises were poured at my work and then I was presented with the awards — a trophy, a scholarship and cash award amounting to $5000.
You should have seen me that day. It was one of my most happy moments. To cap it all, the essay was published by several local dailies thus receiving more praises. It is my dream in the future, I will be able to create a documentary which too emphasis on peaceful co-existence.
